The amount of the Federal battery subsidy depends on the usable capacity of the battery. As a rough guide the subsidy is currently around 30% of the total price. For example, for a 13kWh battery you could expect to receive around $3,925 subsidy off the installed system price.

The subsidy is supposed to be available until 2030 however the amount of subsidy reduces on the 1st January each year (similar to the solar rebate). There is also another decreased scheduled for the 1st May this year (2026).

There are many options to upgrade or replace your existing solar system with a new Hybrid inverter or keep your existing solar system and install an AC coupled battery.

Each household uses energy differently however, if you have lots of surplus solar energy during the day it makes great financial sense to install a battery to capture this energy. For example, the battery kicks in later in the day when the sun goes down and the cost of buying energy from the grid is at the highest. In some cases the payback for a solar and battery storage system can be around 4 years and up to 25% simple ROI.

Each battery is different however most quality batteries have a 10 year performance warranty and whilst the usable capacity reduces over time you could expect to get up to 15 years life from a quality battery storage system.
